INTRODUCTION

Impact testers are designed to determine the impact energy required to break a sample. This information is crucial to manufacturers, as the strength and durability of the product will often determine performance characteristics and marketability.

The TMI Impact Testing System uses a high resolution optical encoder and data acquisition to determine the impact resistance of rigid materials in accordance with a wide variety of ASTM and ISO test standards. Interchangeable pendulums and specimen holders are available to measure the impact resistance of a variety of materials. Common test methods include Izod, Charpy, Tension and Laminate testing. Environmental chambers are also available to deliver CO2 or N2 allowing the characterization of materials at cold temperatures. Essentially the Impact test is a single point test that measures a materials resistance to impact from a swinging pendulum. The mass and drop height deliver a definable kinetic energy. This test can be used as a quick and easy quality control check to determine if a material meets specific impact properties or to compare materials for general toughness.

The Monitor/Impact tester’s software provides classification of specimen according to failure category (full, partial, hinge and non-break) plus excessive elongation or necking. Other features include auto-calibration of pendulums, automatic compensation for windage and friction, selectableunits, statistics, average, standard deviation and high/low results.

Motorized Notching Cutter

Monitor/Impact photo. TMI Motorized Notching Cutter (TMI 22-05-03)

Used in conjunction with the Model 43-02 Monitor Impact tester, the TMI Motorized Notching Cutter, Model 22-05-03 produces a notch in a test specimen for ASTM D 256 and ISO 180 according to the IZOD Standard. Charpy notches can also be made according to ASTM D 6110 and ISO 179.

It is noted in ASTM standards that it is extremely critical to produce an accurate cut and to measure the depth and contour of the notch before testing. Result data will be compromised due to poor sample preparation.

Model 22-05-03 Motorized Notching Cutter automates the specimen notching procedure to produce a repeatable and accurate cut every time. An easy to use thickness gage is included to verify the depth cut before testing.

NOTCH SPECIFICATIONS

IZOD IMPACT

ASTM D256
Notch Dimensions: Radius: 0.25 ±0.05 mm 45°
Width remaining under notch: 10.16 ±0.05 mm

CHARPY IMPACT

ASTM D 6110
Notch Dimensions: Radius: 0.25 ±0.05 mm
Width remaining under notch: 10.16 ±0.05 mm

IZOD IMPACT

ISO 180
Notch Dimensions: Radius: 0.25 ±0.05 mm 45°
Width remaining under notch: 8 ±0.2 mm

Charpy Testing

The specimen is mounted horizontally and supported unclamped at both ends. The pendulum is released and allowed to strike through the specimen.

Izod Testing

A test specimen is clamped perpendicular into the impact test fixture with the notched side facing the striking edge of the pendulum. The pendulum strikes through the specimen.p>
