Bekk Smoothness Tester

The Automatic Bekk Smoothness Tester is a microprocessor-controlled instrument for the determination of smoothness of paper and board according to the Bekk Method.

This air leak smoothness test is useful for very smooth surfaces, for example, coated label papers, coated free sheet, or other very smooth papers. Test results generate with the Bekk tester have shown excellent correlation with print smoothness evaluations using offset ink. Likewise, Bekk results have shown good agreement with subjective evaluations of low angle illuminated surface photomicrographs. Surface integrity is particularly important for printing papers. The surface fibers must be sufficiently bonded to those beneath the surface and the coating bond to the fiber matrix must be sound.

Densometer (Gurley)

Model 58-03 measures air permeability (Gurley type) of sheet like materials including Paper, Paperboard and nonwovens. Porosity of paper or density is an important measurement when simulating conditions where paper is picked up under vacuum.

Air resistance by the Gurley method measures the amount of time in seconds for a specific volume of air to pass through the voids in a sheet of paper under a specified clamping pressure.

The Gurley type porosity tester is similar to the Bendtsen air permeance tester, see catalog # 58-21 Roughness and Air Permeance Tester.

Hand Coater

The K Hand Coater provides a simple but effective means of applying paints, printing inks, lacquers, adhesives and other surface coatings onto many substrates. Two or more coatings can be applied side-by-side in a single operation making the system ideal for comparing products.

The K Control Coater is recommended when repeatability is critical such as computer color matching or when a number of operators will be carrying out the test work. Hot Disintegrator

With hot disintegration, pulp shows complete development of strength properties without further treatment. Disintegration time is typically reduced from 15 minutes to 2 minutes.

Disintegrating pulp at elevated temperatures reduces latency by removing the stress that is found in fibers that have been disintegrated at lower temperatures. If disintegration is done in cold water, subsequent testing will not show the full strength development of the pulp. Disintegrating the pulp at elevated temperatures and low consistency relaxes the fibers, thus removing the latency.

Internal Bond Tester

The NEW Internal Bond™ Tester is designed to determine the internal bond strength of a variety of Paper and Board materials according to TAPPI T 569. The instrument design is based on a falling pendulum which creates a high speed impact on a paper specimen. The paper specimen is sandwiched between two double-coated tape substrates. The pendulum impact measures the total energy required to delaminate the internal fibers of a specimen in a "Z" type direction into two separate piles. The system also incorporates an automatic sample preparation station which allows five specimens to be accurately prepared simultaneously. Moisture Meter

The Portable Moisture Meter is a micro-controller based instrument that permits instantaneous nondestructive moisture measurement on all types of paper and paperboard.

For immediate, non-destructive measurement of moisture on moving or stationary rolls, stacks, or reams of paper and paper board. The paper industry has long recognized the need for rapid on-line moisture measurement to assure efficient energy usage and a high yield of good quality paper.

The instrument is built a rugged, portable instrument which truly excels in measurement accuracy. It measures the moisture of a variety of materials by determining its dielectric constant, which is related to its moisture content. Eight readings are taken and the average is displayed as one moisture reading. A new average is taken every half (0.5) second.

Moisture Meter (Paper)

The Model PM-80 is designed to measure the moisture content of paper rolls or stacks of paper. With its unique, patented ball bearing rollers, the PM-80 is equally effective on moving or stationary rolls or stacks of paper. Wet or dry streaks and moisture trends can be detected in seconds and proper corrective action can be taken immediately. The PM-80 uses the patented Radio Frequency Capacitance Method to measure moisture content. Each roller electrode projects an RF field into the sample covering an area approximately 12 inches by 16 inches and penetrating to a depth of two inches. A patented rotateble outer cylinder, concentric with the fixed inner cylinder electrode, conveys the RF signal to the outside roller. The instrument measures the loss, or change, in RF dielectric constant as affected by the presence of moisture. The hard coat insulation on the rollers reduces the effect of surface moisture to enhance measurement accuracy. Powered by alkaline batteries, the PM-80 goes anywhere and a Battery Test button easily checks the condition of the batteries. The PM-80 weighs less than three pounds, yet its rugged one-piece construction allows continuous heavy use in production environments. Internal circuitry is fully temperature compensated and protected from static electricity. The molded plastic handle contains a switch actuating bar and auto turnoff. Three moisture sensitivity ranges, three meter scales, and full scale suppression provide the versatility to handle nearly every paper application and moisture range.

Moisture Meter - Portable (DC-2000-BP)

The Model DC-2000-BP is calibrated to test the moisture content in bales of scrap paper materials. This easy to-operate instrument can be used in factories, mills and yards.

The DC-2000-BP operates by means of a circuit that measures DC resistance in the range of 100,000 megohms to .02 megohms.Using the Electrode Probe, the actual moisture reading occurs across the insulated portion of the probe, which is located one inch from the tip. Thus the probe can be pushed through a wet surface to give an accurate reading of the moisture below, at any depth or successive depths. The probe 1/4” in diameter and 5 inches long with a rounded tip and is constructed of stainless steel along with Teflon® and Delrin® plastics for highest quality insulation and freedom from corrosion.

Buying excess moisture means paying paper prices for water. And, if the bales are too wet, they can cause problems during the processing steps to follow. Overall average moisture content is important, but since bales dry on the outer surface first, it is also very important to find moisture pockets that are buried beneath the apparently dry surface. The DC-2000-BP will quickly pay for itself by making quick, simple tests for moisture at selected locations of representative bales.

Paper Roll Hardness Tester (PAROtester2)

The PAROtester 2 paper roll tester allows for an objective and quick evaluation of the roll hardness, the hardness profile and the variation in hardness of paper, foil and film rolls. Automatic loading and unloading of the impact body by pressing the impact device to the roll results in fast and repeatable tests with more resolution than the commonly used Schmidt hammer test. The PAROtester 2 roll tester impact device is also designed for long service life.

Smith Roll Tightness Tester

The Smith Roll Tightness Tester determines roll winding uniformity to eliminate roll bursting and press breakdown from poorly wound rolls.

Paper Rolls not wound with uniform tension can cause a variety of problems. Large diameter rolls that are extremely tight on the outside tend to burst during handling and shipping. Uneven roll tightness often results in starring- the warping of the winding core. On highspeed web presses, the warped core causes uneven feed and paper jerking and can cause the breakdown of the press.

Taber Stiffness Tester

Precision instrument evaluates material stiffness The Stiffness Tester utilizes a two directional pendulum-type weighing system to evaluate material stiffness, flexural strength, resiliency and elasticity properties. Force is applied to the lower end of the specimen by a pair of rollers attached to the driving disc. The resulting torque tilts the pendulum from its vertical position and a Taber Stiffness Unit reading (g.cm) is taken automatically when the pendulum mark aligns with the appropriate driving disc mark (71/2° or 15°). Predetermined sample length, deflection angle and rate of loading provide accurate and reproducible test results.

Tear testing measures the force required to continue the tearing of an initial cut in sheet materials. Models and weights are available to test material with a variety of strengths. This is also useful to evaluate strength of perforated materials.

Also known as the Elmendorf test, the tearing test has been performed in the paper industry for more than half century in order to measure the mean internal resistance of cellulose or papers to the propagation of a deliberately initiated tear. It enables rapid determination of the dynamic resistance of materials designed to be subjected to strong shearing loads (e.g. newspaper) or liable to be damaged by sharp or heavy objects (e.g. paper bags, seat belts, protective clothing).

Subsequently, the test was naturally adopted for all materials in the form of sheet or films, cardboard, cloth, knitted fabrics, plastic films, aluminum foil, non-woven fabrics, complex flexible packaging etc. for which the service requirements are similar to those for paper.

The 2.5kN is a single-column, Universal tester. Dennison Test Waxes

Dennison type Wax Pick Testing is for the evaluation of surface strength on paper and paperboard. Waxes are heated and applied to the surface of the sheet. After cooling, they are pulled from the surface and the wax stick is checked to see if it has pulled fiber or coating from the surface. The highest value wax which does not rupture the surface is reported as the pick strength of the sheet.

This traditional test has been used for many years and is well known in all parts of the world. It is simple, easy to use, and inexpensive.

ACT Automatic Cobb Tester

This innovative principle offers a completely new opportunity to characterize and understand the phenomena of dynamic water absorption. Here the water uptake is continuously monitored across a full 100 cm² area of sized paper or board as a function of time. Apart from the total amount of absorbed water over 60 seconds, this technology reveals the different dynamic components of water absorption. Once the operator has inserted the test specimen, the test is done automatically by the instrument as no weighing or blotting of the specimen is required. Reflectance Colorimeter

The 68-44 Photovolt Reflectance Colorimeter is designed to simplify the determination of appearance characteristics. This rugged, portable instrument is easy to operate, sets up in just minutes, and has unparalleled flexibility. The unit can be used with a Y or D search unit and any of the 3 Tristimulus Filters (Amber, Green and Blue) for color, reflectance and opacity or with the W Search unit (Blue) for paper brightness. Calibration of the unit is performed with a traceable reflectance standard.
